SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual)

SSC, short for safe, sane and consensual, is a motto that many BDSM practitioners and organisations have adopted since the 1980s.[1]

SSC is the most recognisable and popular model of consent in BDSM circles, though not without criticism.[2] It is one of several competing models of consent within BDSM.[3] It means that everything is based on safe activities, that all participants are of sufficiently sound mind in their conduct, and that all participants consent.[1]

The phrase was coined by David Stein for New York's Gay Male S/M Activists organisation.[4] He intended it only as a minimum standard for ethically defensible S/M play, separating play between loving partners from the public perception of sadomasochism as abusive.[4] As the phrase spread on bumper stickers and T-shirts, people began to associate "safe" with "risk-free", which diluted the message.[4]

SSC tries to describe and differentiate BDSM from abuse in ways that are easy for the non-BDSM public to understand.[5] Advocates of risk-aware consensual kink (RACK) argue that SSC can hamper discussion of risk, because no activity is truly "safe".[6] RACK was created to overcome these perceived shortcomings of SSC.[7]

RACK acknowledges that nothing is ever 100% inherently safe, so within it there is only "safer" and "less safe".[5][8] Other, less well known models of consent include CCC (Committed, Compassionate, Consensual) and the 4 Cs (Caring, Communication, Consent, Caution).[9]
