Hard limit / soft limit

A soft limit is something a person hesitates about or places strict conditions on, but for which they may still give informed consent[1].

Both dominants and submissives can set limits[2].

A soft limit can be an action that is prohibited except under specific circumstances[1]. It can also be an area of discomfort that someone wishes to avoid, or an action that requires a cautious approach[1].

Soft limits can include actions that, while somewhat appealing, still generate an uncomfortable amount of apprehension in one or more partners[1]. This balance allows partners to navigate boundaries thoughtfully, fostering trust and mutual respect in intimate situations[1].

Limits create a framework for exploration while maintaining emotional safety[1].
